Stronger Growth Predicted in China

China’s economic growth quickened in the second quarter from the previous three months, but further modest government support measures will still be needed, Prime Minister Li Keqiang said on Monday.


Speaking at a news conference with the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, who is visiting Beijing, Mr. Li said that the Chinese economy still faced downward pressure and that the government would increase its use of targeted measures to bolster growth.


His cautiously optimistic remarks may raise market confidence ahead of China’s second-quarter economic report, due on July 16. Analysts polled by Reuters say that they expect China’s growth for the April-June period to have steadied at 7.4 percent.
