Curse Inc., a U.S. online gaming media company, has landed a $10 million round of equity to help develop a voice chat system that’s similar to a product used by online gamers in China, as an increasing number of overseas businesses look to China for technology ideas.
The tables have turned in the last few years after Chinese companies were often criticized for adopting or rejigging ideas derived from U.S. or European businesses and then localizing them for the mainland market.
Curse has developed a beta version of a chat system that can be used by gamers, typically those of massively multiplayer online games, where numerous people often need to coordinate and play together. The messenger, known as Curse Voice, has 1.5 million active users on a monthly basis while still in the beta mode, said Hans Tung, managing director at GGV Capital, which was the lead investor in the new Series B round.
