Sir, Most Western media accounts of disputes in the South China Sea are one-sided. They present China as the bully, and urge the US to redouble its “pivot” to Asia to contain Chinese expansionism. By this standard Demetri Sevastopulo’s account is commendably balanced (“Troubled waters”, Analysis, June 20). But it omits some points too important to ignore.
The current dispute between China and Vietnam focuses on China putting an oil drilling rig in the Paracels (Xisha/Hoang Sa). To understand what is going on the following should be kept in mind.
