Chinese health authorities said they were investigating the possibility that a new form of bird flu has passed between members of a family in Shanghai as the country continues its hunt for clues about the spread of the disease, which has killed 17 since the first detection of a case in humans last month.
The Shanghai family includes an 87-year-old man surnamed Li who died on March 4 and was among the first people confirmed to have been infected with H7N9 virus. One of the man’s sons was also infected but has since recovered. A second son was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia-like symptoms and died before tests could be done.
Infections of multiple family members are referred to in public-health and epidemiological circles as “family clusters.”
