China Asks to Postpone Japan, Korea Summit

An annual summit meeting of leaders from China, Japan and South Korea scheduled for May in Seoul will likely be postponed at China’s request, a South Korean government official said Thursday.


“Leaders of the three countries likely won’t have a meeting in May. China said it’s difficult to have one next month, citing domestic political schedules,” said Lee Mi-yon, a spokeswoman for Seoul’s presidential office.


South Korean and Japanese media have reported that Beijing has asked South Korea, chair of the meeting this year, to postpone it because of China’s territorial dispute with Japan over a group of islands in the East China Sea. The South Korean official said she couldn’t provide a more specific reason.
