Looking at G.M., China Widens Crackdown on Multinationals

General Motors said Tuesday that it had been contacted by the Chinese authorities as part of a broadening antitrust investigation into foreign automakers. The disclosure came a day after Audi said that in one province, the dealership network of its Chinese joint venture in one province had broken national antitrust rules and would be punished by the government.


The automakers’ difficulties came as foreign companies in a range of industries have felt a chill from more energetic enforcement by China of antitrust rules. Large companies like Microsoft, Qualcomm, Accenture and a half dozen manufacturers of infant formula have all been scrutinized in the past year, which included raids on Microsoft’s offices in China late last month and on Daimler’s Shanghai offices last week.
