A Shanghai court Friday described as a “human-rights violation” the purchase by two foreign corporate investigators, a British man and his American wife, of personal information about Chinese citizens, and said a verdict was imminent.
The trial of 58-year-old Briton Peter William Humphrey and his partner and wife, Yu Yingzeng, 60, a U.S. citizen, is closely watched for its implications on the treatment of business data. In appearing to invoke a definition of privacy standards for Chinese citizens, the court said the foreigners committed crimes by putting a value on such information.
A one-day trial in Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court on Friday was the couple’s first court appearance since they were detained in the middle of last year. Though they were well-known in China, the case took on added significance because of a key client at the time, GlaxoSmithKline GSK.LN -0.33% PLC. Their arrest came days after Chinese authorities publicly leveled bribery allegations against the U.K. drug giant, which had hired the investigators to conduct part of an internal probe.
