Japan-China Trade Expected to Rebound

As tempers gradually cool after a year that brought anti-Tokyo protests in Beijing and riots in Shenzhen, Japan’s exports to China are expected to bounce back in 2013, a Japanese government trade body said Tuesday.


The outlook for imports from China is also brighter, with growth expected to recover from last year’s weak pace. Despite continued political tensions between the world’s second- and third-largest economies, China is forecast to remain Japan’s top trading partner for the seventh year in a row.


In 2012, Japanese exports to China fell for the first time since 2009, dropping 10% to $144.7 billion, the Japan External Trade Organization said. Japanese imports from China were up, but by the slowest pace since 2009, rising just 3% to $188.9 billion.
