The U.S. has asked China to support President Barack Obama’s efforts to form a coalition of countries combating extremist group Islamic State, a senior U.S. administration official said Tuesday after a visit to Beijing by national security adviser Susan Rice.
Chinese officials expressed an interest in the U.S. proposal during Ms. Rice’s three-day visit, and the U.S. was exploring areas in which China could contribute to the coalition, the U.S. administration official told reporters on a conference call.
China’s Foreign Ministry didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on that issue, but Chinese officials have said recently that there may be Chinese citizens from the northwestern region of Xinjiang fighting with Islamic extremists in Iraq and Syria.
