Countries around the world are joining the chorus to support Hong Kong’s fight for free elections, despite Beijing’s consistent calls for them stay out of its business.
On Sunday, Beijing announced that candidates for Hong Kong’s chief executive election in 2017 must get support from at least half of a 1,200-member nomination committee filled with Beijing loyalists and pro-business members in order to run. The move effectively squelches Hong Kong pan-democracy groups’ hope for “genuine choice,” sparking outrage within and outside the former British colony.
In the United Kingdom, some parliament members plan to launch an inquiry into whether Beijing’s latest stipulations have breached the Sino-British Joint Declaration, which agreed that Hong Kong’s way of life must remain intact for five decades upon returning to Chinese rule in 1997.
