Instead of viewing the 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership as an “insidious containment strategy,” Chinese officials are reportedly starting to see the trade pact more as the wave of the future and something they need to be part of.
It’s never been a stated mission of the Obama administration to use its massive Pacific trade agreement to force China — not now part of the deal — to play by the same trade rules as the rest of the nations in that part of the world. But it’s been suggested by many who follow trade that such containment might be a motivating goal of the agreement.
