China will encourage consolidation in its fragmented poultry industry to prevent livestock diseases from recurring as the outbreak of the bird flu virus H7N9 reduces demand and causes losses.
Small farms and live-poultry markets scattered around the country made it easier for the virus to spread among humans and birds, the Ministry of Health said on its official microblog yesterday. The H7N9 strain incurred 20 billion yuan ($3.3 billion) in losses to the local chicken sector last month as consumers avoided poultry products, the China Animal Agriculture Association said Feb. 7.
