Hundreds of Philippines demonstrators descended on the Chinese consular office Wednesday in Manila’s financial district of Makati to protest what they called China’s “bullying” in disputed areas in the South China Sea.
The consulate closed for security reasons while riot-police, armed with shields and truncheons, secured the building. There was no violence by the 500 protesters that police estimated took part. The protesters signed a manifesto urging China to withdraw warships from areas of the South China Sea claimed by Manila and to take part in international arbitration that Manila has launched at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague.
