Japan, South Korea and China Agree on Nuclear Safety Network

At a time of heightened regional tensions, Japan, South Korea and China have agreed to form a network to quickly exchange information in a nuclear emergency such as the Fukushima-Daiichi accident in 2011, Japanese and Korean officials said on Wednesday.


The three countries agreed on the framework Thursday at a meeting in China for nuclear regulators and experts, according to Kenzo Oshima, one of five commissioners of Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority. In addition to Japan’s NRA, officials from South Korea’s Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and China’s National Nuclear Security Administration signed the agreement in Taishan, in China’s Guangdong province, according to documents on the pact distributed by the Japanese regulator.
